Therapy for ADHD & Neurodivergent Young People

Why should my child get hypnotherapy for ADHD?

It’s not about treating ADHD itself – but helping with many of the difficulties that often accompany the disorder.

Challenges can include:

  • Emotional regulation
  • Anxiety and excessive worrying
  • Separation anxiety
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Low confidence and self-esteem
  • School stress and exam anxiety
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Social confidence
  • Frustration and anger
  • Building resilience
  • Developing coping strategies

How does hypnotherapy for ADHD work?

Children and teenagers with ADHD often learn differently and engage differently. Rather than expecting them to sit quietly for an hour, I adapt every hypnotherapy session to suit how their brain naturally works.

With over 16 years of experience as a hypnotherapist and trainer, I have helped many children and teenagers build confidence, manage anxiety and develop emotional resilience.

Sessions may include:

  • Conversational play therapy
  • NLP techniques
  • CBT strategies where appropriate
  • Art therapy
  • Visualisation and hypnotherapy
  • Movement where helpful
  • Practical coping tools
  • Collaboration with parents where appropriate

What are hypnotherapy sessions like?

Every session is individually tailored, and I work collaboratively with parents to ensure therapy complements any existing support from schools or healthcare professionals.

Sessions are relaxed, interactive and engaging. Some young people enjoy a specific activity, which we can incorporate – such as Lego, Play-Doh, games and creative age-appropriate exercises.

I frame hypnosis as ‘storytelling’ with your child’s eyes closed. Some enjoy closing their eyes, whilst others prefer to keep them open – and both approaches work equally well.

Children and young people respond incredibly well to hypnosis, but as a parent you may have some concerns…

Will my child lose control?

No, your child will not lose control. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and relaxation. Your child remains aware throughout.

What if my child can’t sit still?

That’s absolutely fine. Sessions are adapted to suit children who need movement, regular changes of pace or shorter exercises.

Sessions accommodate a use of coping strategies such as fidget toys, routines, short movement breaks, etc.

Does my child have to believe in or understand hypnosis?

No, your child does not have to understand hypnosis. The important element is their willingness to participate rather than believing in hypnosis.

Can hypnotherapy replace medication?

No, hypnotherapy cannot replace medication. Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy and should work alongside any medical advice from your child’s healthcare professional.

Common issues young clients struggle with:

  • Big emotional reactions
  • Meltdowns
  • Overwhelm
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Constant worrying
  • Lack of confidence
  • School avoidance
  • Anger
  • Negative thinking
  • Trouble-making friends
  • Exam stress

How will I notice if hypnotherapy is working?

Over the course of the sessions parents often notice:

  • Calmer responses to challenges
  • Increased confidence
  • Improved emotional awareness
  • Better sleep
  • Greater resilience
  • Improved communication
  • Fewer emotional outbursts
  • More independence
  • Better ability to pause before reacting
